Exploring Probiotics and Hypertension: Promising Insights and Current Questions.

But experts stress that this research is still in its infancy and comes with limitations, given that it was conducted on a small sample size of just 29 mice.
According to data from Million Hearts, a national initiative aimed at reducing heart attacks and strokes, about 120 million U.S.
Adults live with hypertension, or high blood pressure. Hypertension can have a cascading effect, increasing the risk of other health issues, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.
Traditionally, lifestyle modifications and medications are recommended to treat or lower high blood pressure.
However, this recent small study on 29 mice suggests that two strains of probiotics, Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus rhamnosus, found in some food products like yogurt and cheese, may offer protective benefits against hypertension.
The research, published in mSystems, adds to existing studies that indicate probiotics may have antihypertensive effects. Jun Li, Ph.D., a computational biologist and researcher.
Noted, “Accumulated evidence supports an antihypertensive effect of probiotics and probiotic fermented foods in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. So, we believed that the dietary intake of probiotic foods would well supplement traditional hypertension treatment.”
However, it’s important to exercise caution as there are still unanswered questions regarding whether these probiotic strains can genuinely benefit hypertension treatment and protection, especially in human subjects.
Dr. Alexander Postalian, a cardiologist at the Texas Heart Institute, underlines this by stating, “This study was small and done in mice. It is too early to draw definitive conclusions in humans.”
While the potential benefits of probiotics in hypertension treatment are intriguing, it is essential to consider the limitations of the research and consult healthcare professionals for a comprehensive understanding of treatment options.
