CDC Warns  Of Low Rates Of Vaccination During The Flu Season

The US Centers for Disease Control has urged the populace of the urgent need for vaccination amidst the increase in respiratory virus infections during the flu season.

The recent rise in pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome following SARS-CoV-2 cases has also been reported (Source: CNN).

The agency came forward to say

Low vaccination rates, coupled with ongoing increases in national and international respiratory disease activity caused by multiple pathogens, including influenza viruses, SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), and RSV, could lead to more severe disease and increased healthcare capacity strain in the coming weeks.

As per the estimates, nearly less than 7 million people have received a flu shot for the flu season. Last month’s data represents 36%, including both children and adults have received the vaccination.

As per the latest estimates, only 8% of the children have received a vaccine with nearly 17% of the adults receiving it till 2nd December.

The populace at higher risk of the infection re[presented a poor data as well- with only 36% of the elderly receiving the latest shot.

The new RSV vaccine which was recently available for administration was also poorly up-taken by the population, with only 16% of people aged 60 years or above receiving the vaccine.

The CDC has come forward with the recommendation that Covid-19 and flu vaccines are mandatory for people aged 6 months and above. With the new RSV vaccine available for older adults- those aged 60 years and above.

The recommendation is a reminder that vaccination is one of the most important tools against the prevention of infections caused by microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. Especially those who predominate the flu season.

In addition, receiving proper immunization ensures that hospitalizations and deaths are prevented. With nearly 1 out of 7 individuals reporting long Covid, it beocmes necessary for people to take the right measures.
